Harold Gordon

October 28, 1951 — February 4, 2014

Mr. Harold Curtis Gordon, Jr., 62, died Tuesday, February 4, 2014, at Baptist Memorial Golden Triangle Hospital in Columbus, MS. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, February 8th, at Porter Funeral Home, with Rev. Prentiss Gordon, Sr., Rev. Prentiss Gordon, Jr., and Rev. Owen Gordon officiating. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Porter Funeral Home. Mr. Gordon was born October 28, 1951, in New Orleans, LA. Harold was a lifelong resident of the three county area, Choctaw, Oktibbeha, and Winston, having gone to school in Weir, Louisville, Sturgis, and Mississippi State University, where he graduated with a BS in Forestry. He worked for 16 years with Sturgis Lumber Company, until he went into business for himself in 1990 as a forester and consultant. Harold was involved professionally with the Society of American Foresters, serving in both local and state positions. He served as President of the Mississippi State School of Forest Resources Alumni Association. He was also active in the Mississippi Forestry Association, having served in various positions, including President. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mae Belle Shumaker Rhodes; his father, Harold Curtis Gordon, Sr.; his “daddy”, Bill Rhodes; and two brothers, Henry Rhodes and John Curtis Gordon. He is survived by his wife, Debbie Barnett Gordon of Louisville; two sons, Brian Gordon of Nashville, TN, and Neil Gordon of Ackerman; a step-son, Jordan Hammons of Dallas, TX; a step-daughter, Heather Shockley of Denver, CO; a sister, Ann Whitten of Grenada, MS; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. In lieu, of flowers, the family request that memorials may be made to the American Leukemia Society, or the Mississippi Forestry Association Foundation.
