George Eddie Peters, 97, died Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at his residence at BeeHive Homes of Louisville, Mississippi. Visitation will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, September 26, 2026, at First Baptist Church in Louisville, followed by the funeral service at 10 a.m. Rev. Trent Jaudon is officiating. Interment will follow in Mashulaville Cemetery. Porter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
George was born February 22, 1929, in Mashulaville, Mississippi, to Frank Preston Peters and Ina Viola Stewart Shearer Peters. The seventh of eight children, he grew up on the family farm in Noxubee County and graduated from Noxubee County Agricultural High School. After high school, he joined the U.S. Army.
While stationed in Germany, George began writing to a young woman who was a family friend of one of his Army buddies. Over more than a year of correspondence, he fell in love with Rebecca Uithoven. They finally met in person when he returned home, and they were married on August 12, 1951. Theirs was a wonderful, lifelong love story.
George and Rebecca were longtime residents of Augusta, Georgia, where he attended Augusta College and worked as an X-ray technician at Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center, eventually retiring as supervisor of the department. Not one to sit still, he went on to serve as X-ray supervisor at the Medical College of Georgia. He was known for his great sense of humor and his knack for solving problems and overcoming obstacles.
Though George and Rebecca were not blessed with children of their own, they were devoted to their many nieces and nephews. For many years they served their church by working with children, young singles, and young married couples, and they opened their home to countless people, making every one of them feel welcome. George was also deeply involved in mission work in Ukraine, recruiting and training ministers, traveling on mission trips, and helping those who came to the United States to visit or to live. He and Rebecca hosted several of these families in their home and became close friends and mentors to them. Together they funded college and professional education for more than 20 young people in Ukraine.
Throughout his life, George drew on his farming roots, working his properties as a gardener, forester, mechanic, and heavy equipment operator. An avid hunter and fisherman, he enjoyed both nearly until the end of his life. He took special pride in teaching many of his nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews, to water ski. George was loved by all, lived life to the fullest, and thoroughly enjoyed being the life of the party. Everyone who had the privilege of knowing him carries fond memories of him.
At BeeHive Homes, George quickly settled into his new surroundings and made fast friends among the residents and staff. The family is deeply grateful to the BeeHive staff for the wonderful, loving care they gave him in his final days. In the end, he was ready for his eternal home and his reunion with his beloved Rebecca.
George was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Rebecca Uithoven Peters; his sister, Hallie Peters Moore; and his six brothers, Freddie Peters, Charles Peters, Perry Peters, James Peters, John Peters, and Clyde Shearer. He is survived by a host of nieces and nephews on both the Peters and Uithoven sides.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that gifts be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
